Ancient Tanning Methods
Photographer: Gunta Podina(Latvia) Time: July 22, 2007 Place: Fes, Morocco Nationality: Moroccan Introduction: The ancient city of Fes in Morocco is famous for its old leather tannery, where ancient methods are still used. There are many tanks vary from different use. First they soak skins in water to clean and soften them. Then they pound and scour the skin to remove any remaining flesh and fat. Then they soak the skin in urine. After the hair fibers are loosened, the tanners scrape them off with a knife, then tanners use their bare feet to knead the skins in the pigeons bung water, and the kneading can last 2 to 3 hours. Then skins are left in water for souring. They still use vegetable tanning. After all these work, skins are carried out in the sun for drying.
