
☆ Born in Shanghai in 1947.
☆ Finished the high school in Shanghai Beijiao High School in 1966. On each July 16th, Shen guided the team member to swim the Yangtse River for commemorating Chairman Mao's swiming experience.
☆ Worked in the Shanghai Traffic & Transport Bureau from 1968 to 1978. As well he was in charge of the coach of Shanghai Youth Women Volleyball Team.
☆ Deputy director of electronical department of Shanghai Educational Academy from 1978 to 1980. And he started to learn the photography in the ShanghaiScientific & Educational Film Studio.
☆ Quitted from his comfortable job in 1980 and went on the solo-photographic tour by a bicycle until October, 1982.
☆ In March 1983, Shen's photo exhibition about theminorities of Southwest China was shown in Beijing,Shanghai, Shandong and Guangdong Provinces.
☆ Since 1983, he continued his documenting work with the formal admission from the government. Up to now 51 nationalities were photographed by Shen.
☆ Worked as the director of China Nationality Exhibition Office from 1983 to 1993.
☆ Since 1985, he devoted himself into the folk-cultural photography. He has ever lectured in the Beijing University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University and etc. to advocate the new subject of photography.
☆ In 1989, the China Foreign Language Publishing House published his photo book in English, French, Spanish and Japanese.
☆ Wrote for many newspaper and magazine since 1990, his main articles include "the Era of Public Photography & Folk-cultural Photography", "Folk-cultural Photography, Memories of the Mankind", "the Task of Folk-cultural Photographer" and etc.
☆ In 1991, the People Daily Publishing House published his book "Solo Tour around China".
☆ In 1993, Shen set up the China Folklore Photographic Association(CFPA).
☆ In 1994, he was engaged as a researcher for the Central Nationality University and edited the first series book about folk-cultural photography.
☆ In 1997, his photos were adopted in the first postcards in China concerning the traditional culture of Chinese nationalities.
☆ In 1998, the Jiangxi Fine Art Publishing House published a book about his photo tour.
☆ In 1998, organized the first international photographic contest, Humanity Photo Awards with the subject of folk-culture.
☆ In 1998, accepted the authorization of co-sponsoring the HPA2000 contest from UNESCO.
☆ In 2000, chaired the second Folk-cultural Seminar in Quanzhou City.
☆ From 2001, he paid more attention on the cultural heritage protection.
☆ In 2001, he attended the 7th National Literature & Art Congress. Important Experiences on the International Exchange
★ In 1987, the Hong Kong Commerce Publishing House published his book. And he was interviewed by some TV program in Hong Kong.
★ In 1988, his story during photographing in Southwest China was publsihed in Taiwan.
★ In 1989, the Embassy of France invited him to show his slides.
★ In 1989, he visited Japan with his exhibition and book in Japanese.
★ In 1989, he visited South Korea as the first Chinese photographer since the Korean War. He made a couple of lectures in the universities in Korea as well.
★ In 1993, he was accredited by the Ministry of Culture of PRC to India for a seminar and gave a speech about the Chinese nomads on the meeting.
★ 1995 to 1996, guided Chinese photographers to visit Burma twice and had an interview with the Minister of Cultural Ministry of Burma.
★ In 1997, he gave a lecture about the Zang Nationality (Tibetan) living around China to the Doctors from America.
★ In 1997, he visited UNESCO in Paris and introduced the Humanity Photo Awards.
★ In 1997, he was invited by the Foreigner Club in Beijing to introduce the culture of China and the Humanity Photo Awards.
★ In 1998, visited the office of World Press Photo in Amsterdam.
★ In 1998, visited the office of the Royal Photographic Society in Bath (London).
★ In 1999, his photos about Chinese folk-culture were exhibited in the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
★ In 1999, the exhibition was moved to the Albert Kahn Museum.
★ In 2000, a slide show was delivered by Shen in the office of the Delegation of China to UNESCO.
★ In 2000, visited Canada at the invitation of Mr. Li Siyuan, the councillor of Vancouver.
★ In 2000, attended the 12th International Photo Festival in Perpignan in France.
★ In 2001, his photos were exhibited in the Independent Artists Salon in Paris.
★ Since 1987, he had visited India, Pakistan, Nepal, Burma, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Britain, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, Italy, Canada and etc.
★ In 2004, invited by UNESCO to be the Ambassador of “Mondialogo”, which is one of UNESCO’s grand cultural program aiming to foster dialogues and exchanges among global cultures.
★ In 2005, acted as the executive and designer of the exhibition held in the UN exhibition hall of Japan’s Aichi Expo;
★ In 2005,he led and planned another exhibition Memories of the Mankind—“The whole world is a family”in the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris, France; This exhibition was a prelude to the cerebration of the 60th anniversary of UNESCO. HPA was awarded the highest cultural and spiritual prize by UNESCO.
★ In 2007, he opened Asian Games Forum by a speech titled Asian Details for the 2010 Asian Games to be held in Guangdong; meanwhile, he was appointed as the first Culture Counselor of Asian Games Organizing Committee.
★ In 2007,in charge of the fourth Members’ Congress of CFPA and pointed out a direction for the association ’s future development—folklore culture industry featured resource integration. Meanwhile, he presented the award ceremony of the fifth Humanity Photo Awards (HPA) in Dazhou, Sichuang Province, which is the hometown of CFPA’s previous president.
★ Since 1999, appointed by UNESCO, he has been devoted to the establishment of the World Folklore Photographers Association (WFPA).
