HPA2015 Grand Award

Arnold Simanjuntak(Indonesia)

Time: April 30, 2010-November 11, 2013

Place: Lamalera Village, Lembata, Indonesia

Nationality: Indonesian

Lamalera fishing village is known for traditional whaling. This tradition has been going on for hundreds of years. Natural conditions have helped forming a unique cultural system based on local wisdom inherited from their ancestors. Whaling is not a commercial activity, but a limited production for village needs. Whale meat is bartered with other villagers just as rice and vegetables that they cannot plant. This issue attracts tourists and researchers, but the environmental debate has not been completed yet.
