Nyau is a spiritual society of the Chewa people, who are well known because of their masquerade dances, called Gule Wamkulu. They appear during public holidays, anniversaries and funerals and dance the night away. In 2005, UNESCO recognized the Nyau culture as one of the 90 Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
