UNESCO’s News in April: UNESCO-China Project Advances ICT in Teacher Training in 8 African Countries

The achievements and lessons learned of a project to advance ICT in teaching training in Africa will be shared at a meeting at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris on 19 to 20 April, 2016.

The concluding meeting on the UNESCO-China-Funds-in-Trust (CFIT) Project “Harnessing Technology for Quality Teacher Training in Africa” will be attended by ministerial and institutional representatives, the Permanent Delegation to UNESCO from the eight CFIT countries and China, and external evaluators.

The meeting will address the achievements and lessons learned in the first three project countries: Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, and Namibia. The meeting will also review the progress of the CFIT project in Congo, DR Congo, Liberia, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The CFIT project was launched in 2012 with the support of the Chinese government and a budget of $8 million donated by the Chinese government for a four-year period finishing in 2016. The project is one of UNESCO’s initiatives to accelerate progress towards Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 9 (Innovation) in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Key teacher training institutes enabled

At the end of the project, it is expected that the capacity of the selected key teacher education/training institutions will have been enhanced in all target countries and that they will have:

  • improved the teacher supply of existing key teacher education/training institutions through strengthening improving ICT-supported distance training programmes;
  • well established programmes for in-service teachers’ continuous professional development;
  • enhanced the capacity of teacher training institutions to develop training programmes on ICT for pre-service teachers and improved teacher trainers’ capability of implementing ICT training;
  • reinforced knowledge sharing and networking among institutional leaders, policy-makers and other concerned stakeholders to improve policies and practices to create the proper environment for teacher education/training institutions to operate within.

The implementation in Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia and Namibia was completed in December 2015 and an external evaluation carried out.
